Russian war criminals again fired at the site of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. This time, the missiles hit a site near a dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. This was reported by the Ukrainian operator Energoatom.
As a result of shelling, radiation monitoring sensors were damaged. Now it is impossible to detect in time the deterioration of the radiation situation or the leakage of radiation from containers of spent nuclear fuel. The incident took place on the evening of August 6, when the invaders covered Energodar with missiles.
This information was confirmed by the mayor of the city Dmitry Orlov. It is known that one of the ZNPP workers is in the hospital with shrapnel injuries. From explosions on the territory of 800 sq. m smashed the windows of the station.
Energoatom reports that before the shelling, about 500 Russians and Rosatom personnel fled to the bunkers beforehand.
Obviously, they were aiming at the containers of spent nuclear fuel, which are stored in the open air near the shelling sites. 174 containers, each containing 24 spent nuclear fuel assemblies! Due to enemy rocket attacks, three radiation monitoring sensors around the site of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant were damaged. Therefore, timely detection and response in the event of a deterioration in the radiation situation or leakage of radiation from containers of spent nuclear fuel is not yet possible, summed up in Energoatom.
Recall that Energoatom asks the world to establish a demilitarized zone on the territory of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in order to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.
