The head of the Roman Catholic Church held a meeting with the second most influential representative of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Pope Francis met on Friday with Metropolitan Anthony, the second most influential head of the Russian Orthodox Church. The meeting took place before the meeting announced for September with Patriarch Kirill, who supports the war in Ukraine, and also fell under sanctions in several European countries. This was reported by Vatican News on Friday, August 5.
Metropolitan Anthony is included in the Vatican’s list of official meetings of the Pope. However, the details of this private audience are still unknown.
The Interfax news agency, citing a statement from the department for external church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, headed by Anthony, reported that the conversation was conducted in Italian. During the meeting, “many issues on the agenda of Orthodox-Catholic relations, including in the context of political processes taking place in the world,” were discussed.
It will be remembered that Pope Francis intends to visit Russia and Ukraine. His visit could take place in July.
In addition, American actor Ethan Hawke called on the Pope to take part, as well as to lead a peace march in support of the Ukrainian people.
