The US administration has previously heard China’s statements about its intention to discuss issues of strategic stability, but “Washington does not see Beijing’s real readiness for such work.”
China announced the end of talks with the United States on several issues, including between military commanders in theaters of war on different continents and climate change. On Friday, August 5, Reuters reports.
China’s Foreign Ministry also said it has suspended exchanges of views with Washington on combating cross-border crime and drug trafficking.
In this regard, the White House said that China’s suspension of talks with the United States on climate change is “irresponsible.”
US National Security Administration spokesman John Kirby was quoted as saying by The Independent.
He emphasized that China, which is cutting ties, believes that its actions are punishing the United States, but in fact “create a problem for the whole world.”
“In fact, they are punishing the whole world, where climate change knows no geographical boundaries,” he said.
“The world’s biggest greenhouse gas polluter is now refusing to discuss the critical steps it needs to take to tackle the climate crisis that has hit our partners, from rising water levels in the Pacific Islands to wildfires in Europe,” said a White House spokesman.
For his part, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kohl pointed out that China is in the process of increasing its nuclear arsenal three to four times.
“China is in the process of building its nuclear arsenal at a very fast pace – three or even four times,” he said.
Kohl noted that the US administration has previously heard China’s statements about its intention to discuss issues of strategic stability, but “Washington does not see Beijing’s real readiness for such work.”
Earlier, China called on all countries in the world to implement a general agreement on the non-first use of nuclear weapons.
“All nuclear powers must support China’s policy of rejecting the possibility of a first strike and conclude a multilateral agreement on the non-first use of nuclear weapons, make efforts to establish nuclear-weapon- free zone, prevent the unauthorized use of nuclear weapons, establish binding international security instruments,” China said.
According to the head of the department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Fu Cong, China’s stockpiles of nuclear weapons are “at the minimum level necessary to ensure national security.”
It was previously reported that China has suspended cooperation with the United States in some areas due to the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Congress to Taiwan.
