In European countries this year, demand for imported food is greater than expected.
The food crisis, warned by many international organizations, is preventable. This was announced on Friday, August 5, in a video message by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
He pointed out that three ships with grain left Ukrainian ports. The President said that if this continues, the food crisis will be overcome.
“Ships carrying about 60 tons of corn have left from Odessa and Chernomorsk. The grain is expected in Turkey, Great Britain and Ireland,” he said.
The President emphasized that it is important to continue to increase exports.
“The more grain we have on the world market, the less the harvest of political unrest in countries especially in Africa and Asia, but not only there,” Zelensky stressed.
A heatwave that produced smaller harvests boosted demand for imported food in Europe this year, he said.
“The Ukrainian harvest of grain and oilseeds will reach more than 65 million tons. Then, the food crisis that threatens the world can be overcome,” added the head of state.
This week, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy raised the forecast for the 2022 harvest from 60 million tons to 65-67 million tons compared to 106.5 million tons last year.
During the 2022 sowing campaign, 14.16 million hectares of land were sown during the war – this is 83.7% of the figures for the previous year (16.92 million hectares).
