The fighting in the Kyiv region lasted no more than a month and a half, during which the cultural heritage of the region suffered serious losses.
Libraries, cinemas, houses of culture, art education and leisure centers were damaged or destroyed. Those damaged include 84 cultural heritage sites, 24 places of worship and 16 memorials. This was reported by the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.
So, two ancient wooden churches were destroyed – the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious (the village of Zavorichi, 1873) and the Ascension of the Lord (the village of Lukyanovka, 1879).
Also in the Kyiv region, the Ivankovsky Museum of Local Lore and the Local Lore Museum of Borodianshchina were completely destroyed. Partial damage was received by the Weaving Museum in Obukhovichi, the Irpin Museum of Local History and the National Museum-Reserve of the Battle for Kyiv in 1943.
During the occupation, not only buildings were destroyed, but also museum exhibits, art objects, in particular, Ukrainian national costumes, furniture, books and towels.
“This is nothing but an attempt by the occupiers to destroy our identity and history. Now, no matter what happens, we must preserve our culture and historical monuments for future generations,” OVA said in a statement.
Let’s recall that earlier the Ministry of Culture reported that since the beginning of the war, the Russian invaders in Ukraine damaged or completely destroyed at least 166 cultural monuments.
