Tijuana
In Mexico, the first day of spring coincides with a public holiday. For many Taiwanese, now is a great time to cross the border and shop on the American side. At the San Ysidro border crossing, the busiest in the world, regular traffic jams equal a long line of pedestrians. Among the smiling and relaxed Mexicans and Americans, some passers-by look serious. Weapons loaded with luggage, exhausted from a long journey. they are either Ukrainian or Russian and landed in Tijuana the same morning.
Anastasia arrives before the American border guards out of breath. The 19-year-old girl is Ukrainian, she is accompanied by her American husband. He hands his blue passport to the guard, who motions for him to wait by the side. The couple arrives from Puerto Vallarta, a resort town on the Pacific coast of Mexico. “I went there because it’s the only place I know in Mexico.”says the young woman in perfect English.
