António Guterres said it was “immoral” to profit from a crisis that affected the most vulnerable parts of the population.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments to impose additional taxes on energy companies’ profits amid rising fuel prices. This was reported by BBC News.
It was noted that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine worsened the global shortage of oil and gas, which led to a sharp increase in energy prices.
Guterres said it was “immoral” for companies to profit from the crisis.
“This grotesque greed is punishing the poorest and most vulnerable while destroying our only home. I call on all governments to tax this excess profit and use the funds to support the poorest people in these are difficult times,” the UN Secretary General insisted.
He warned that high energy prices will have a wide range of consequences as households and governments around the world succumb to the pressure.
Recall that the four largest energy companies – Exxon, Chevron, Shell and TotalEnergies, earned almost $51 billion in the last quarter, which is almost twice as much as in the same period last year.
