The International Committee of the Red Cross has visited Yelenovka once since May, in May, to deliver water tanks.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said it does not guarantee the safety of Ukrainian defenders and defenders who left Azovstal in Mariupol. This was announced on Wednesday, August 3, in a message on the organization’s website.
It was noted that as a neutral mediator, the ICRC “facilitated the safe exit of combatants from the Azovstal plant in coordination with the parties to the conflict.”
“We do not guarantee the safety of prisoners of war in the hands of the enemy, because it is beyond our power. We have explained this to the parties in advance. The parties to the conflict are obliged to ensure the protection of prisoners of war from acts of violence, intimidation and public curiosity, as well as from the consequences of the conflict. Only the conflict of the parties can finally ensure the safety of prisoners of war, “said the Red Cross.
The organization also noted that although they were able to visit some prisoners of war held by the partisans, they repeatedly stated that they still did not have access to all prisoners of war, including those held at Yelenovka.
“The ICRC must be allowed to visit and revisit prisoners of war, especially those not yet granted access, and to fulfill its humanitarian mandate,” it said.
It is known that on the evening of July 29, an explosion occurred on the territory of the former penal colony in Yelenovka in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region. As a result, the building was destroyed, containing Ukrainian prisoners of war, who were removed from the Azovstal plant. According to the Russian side, more than 50 Ukrainian defenders died, the number of wounded is unknown.
After the terrorist attack in Yelenovka, the Red Cross requested access to the colony and all places where victims were treated or where bodies could be transported. The Red Cross also offered to support the evacuation of the injured and donate medicines, protective equipment and forensic materials free of charge, an offer that went unanswered, as did a request for access .
“We are ready to deploy to Yelenevka. We already have medical and forensic teams working nearby, as we have been working in Donetsk since 2014,” the Red Cross added.
In this regard, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out targeted deliberate shelling of the correctional institution in Yelenovka, and the statements about the alleged’ y shelling from the Ukrainian side is a blatant lie and a provocation.
