The idea of future security guarantees for Ukraine is the readiness of European countries for military relationships with Russia, the President of Finland believes.
Finland President Alexander Stubb has indicated that Russia has no influence on the format of future security guarantees for Ukraine, which will be considered after the conclusion of a peace agreement between Kiev and Moscow. He said this in an interview with the Guardian British publication before a New York trip to the UN General Assembly.
The STUBB emphasized that security guarantees are a key element of any potential aggression. According to him, in order for these steps to be effective, they must be strong and convincing.
In his opinion, security guarantee for Ukraine, discussed Wish coalitionmeans the obligations of European countries that will sign them, to fight in Russia if Moscow again begins military operations against Ukraine. He also clarified that these guarantees would not be valid until the legal integration -with a peace agreement between the parties in the conflict.
The President of Finnish clearly noted that the Kremlin has no right to have a veto in the process of determining security guarantees for Ukraine. He emphasized that the decisions of the Sovereign state should remain independent: Russia, regardless of its attitude, will not interfere with these processes.
“Russia is absolutely no vote on the sovereign decisions of an independent national state … Therefore, for me the question is not whether or not Russia will agree. Of course, no, but this is not the main thing,” he said.
When asked if the guarantees meant the willingness of European countries to participate in the Russian military confrontation in case there was a new invasion against Ukraine, Stubb replied:
“This is the essence of security guarantee by definition.”
In his comments, Stubb also added that he knows the value of a realistic approach to creating a security system. He assured that Ukraine’s partners would ensure the creation of such training mechanisms, and not in theory.
He also said that “American support” is necessary for security guarantees to gain real strength, and admit that once there is no complete understanding of how prepared the Trump administration is for such steps.
