Against the background of the worsening situation around Taiwan, the Chinese army began maneuvering in the South China Sea.
The People’s Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China began a live-fire exercise in the South China Sea on August 2. The maneuvers will last until August 6, Interfax reported, citing China’s Maritime Security Administration.
In this regard, the entry of all ships in the areas, the coordinates of which are indicated on the agency’s website, is prohibited.
It has been noted that in recent days, against the backdrop of a possible visit to Taiwan by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, the Chinese military has stepped up exercises in the South China and East China Seas. In particular, the maneuvers are taking place in the waters of Fujian Province, which is separated from the island by a strait.
According to media reports, Pelosi will fly to Taiwan on Tuesday night and meet with President Tsai Ing-wen the next day.
Beijing has repeatedly warned Washington about the House of Representatives speaker’s trip to Taiwan, calling the expected visit “gross interference in China’s internal affairs.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said “the country’s army will not sit down.”
Against the background of the worsening situation on Chinese television, footage of military equipment appeared in the Fujian province closest to Taiwan, as well as a video of an exercise.
In addition, it was learned that airports in Fujian province canceled more than 290 flights per day. At the same time, flights operating along China’s southern and eastern coasts were redirected to mainland routes.
It should be remembered that China considers Taiwan its territory, and has never ruled out the possibility of occupying the island by force. Taipei rejects Beijing’s claim to sovereignty and aims to defend itself.
Because of Pelosi’s expected visit to the island, relations between the United States and China have increased.
