From the beginning of the entire invasion of Russia, Ukraine began to get rid of Soviet symbols, monuments to Russian cultural figures and others.
Instead of the Moscow Empress Catherine II, the initiators of the petition to the president proposed to build a monument to the American actor Billy Herrington in Odessa. This was announced on Monday, August 1, on the official website of the President.
After considering the petition, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded to it.
Zelensky sent this issue for the consideration of local representatives, since the monument to Catherine II was erected by the decision of the Odessa City Council.
“I turned to the Odessa City Council with a request to consider the issues raised in the petition in accordance with competence,” Zelensky said.
At the same time, the president noted the importance of protecting national interests and cleaning public space of objects and monuments related to the Russian and Soviet imperial heritage, “reinforcing Russian anti-Ukrainian propaganda narratives in Ukraine.”
The original monument to Catherine II in Odessa was built in 1900 according to the project of the architect Yuri Dmitrenko. However, after the advent of Soviet power, it was dismantled, and in 1965 a monument to the sailors of the battleship Potemkin was erected on this site. In 2007, during the reconstruction of the square, a monument was erected there to the founders of Odessa, among whom was Catherine II.
Recall that the bust of the Russian poet, playwright and prose writer Alexander Pushkin was dismantled in Zaporozhye.
Earlier it was reported that a monument to Prince Alexander Nevsky, located on Academician Pavlov Street, was demolished in Kharkov.
In addition, in mid-April, a monument to Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov was demolished in Kharkov.
