Against the rear of EU penalties and the increasing pressure of the United States (in particular, the threat of 25% of Russian oil tariffs), this situation is becoming an important challenge in the field of energy security for India.
Saudi Aramco and the Iraqi State Oil Company Somo stopped providing raw oil for Indian Nayara Energy – Enterprises, controlling a stake belonging to the consortium chaired by Russian company Rosneft. According to Reuters, this was the result of the EU penalties imposed on July 2025.
In August, Nayara completely moved to Russia’s oil. Earlier, the company stably received nearly 2 million Iraqi barrels and 1 million Saudi Oil Monthly barrels, but the supplies stopped, and the last volumes were obtained at the end of July.
Due to the power of Nayara refinery in Vadina, with a productivity of 400 thousand barrels per day (about 8% of the country’s total volume), only 70-80% are used. This is due to the difficulties of sales.
For the company’s transportation, the company had to turn to the “Shadow Fleet”, as regular carriers stopped working because of penalty restrictions.
In July of last year, the general director of Nayara resigned, and his position was now taken by an Azerbaijani Socar representative.
Despite the crisis of supplies, Nayara continues to provide Indian domestic market with gasoline thanks to the transportation of train, road and sea. The company also talks to the government to promote logistics and access to the courts.
Against the background of the EU penalties and the pressure from the United States intensified, including the possible introduction of a 25% tariff for Russian oil, this situation represents a serious challenge for India’s energy security.
Earlier, Western Media reported that India plans to increase Russian oil imports in September 10-20%, despite new US penalties. The decision is said to be associated with a reduction in Russian oil prices after attacking Ukrainian drones.
