The State Security Service (SSS) of Latvia has warned senior Latvian officials about the dangers associated with the fact that more and more Russian media companies are starting to operate in the country, Delfi reports.
Since February 24, more than 200 Russian journalists and 23 media outlets have moved to Latvia from Russia. Some of them have officially started work from Riga.
The Latvian State Security Service claims that it is “assessing what is happening in the information space in the context of the current geopolitical situation and Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine.”
“The State Security Service continues to assess the risks arising from Russia’s targeted and systematic efforts to influence the information space and the media. The State Security Service has been notified of the work of the Russian independent media in Latvia. In this regard, the service has identified security risks of the Latvian information space, as well as intelligence risks associated with the fact that media activities are traditionally in favor of Russian special services. The State Security Service informed the top leadership of the country about this,” the service reported.
Recall that Latvia proposed to introduce a ban on issuing EU tourist visas to Russians after the terrorist attack in Yelenovka.
Latvia decided to stop issuing visas to Russians on February 24th.
