The filters of pumping stations for the reactor cooling system are clogged with jellyfish accumulation from the North Sea.

In the north of France, they temporarily restrained the work of one of the country’s largest nuclear power plants – gravelines. The reason is an unexpected naval of a jellyfish that scored cooling systems, CNN reports.

According to the EDF station operator, the three reactors automatically stop on Monday night (no. 2, no. Reactor No. 6 is also disconnected after a few hours. The remaining two blocks are at the planned maintenance, so the entire nuclear power plant suspended the production of electricity.

The gravelines are cooled with water from the canal, which is connected to the North Sea. According to experts, the pillow can be attributed to the heat of water due to the global heat and the spread of invasive species.

“Meduses are faster breed in hotter water, and in regions such as the North Sea, the time for reproduction is increasing,” Derek Wright Oceanic and atmospheric Research Consultant explained in Naval biology. According to him, the jellyfish may also accidentally fall into the ballast tanks of the ships and apply to other continents.

Among the invasive species in the region, Asian Lunar Jellyfish was especially distinguished, first recorded in the North Sea in 2020. He prefers calm water with plenty of zooplankton, such as ports and channels, and has caused problems with nuclear power plants in China, Japan and India.

The EDF ensures that the event does not threaten the security of the station, staff or the environment.

We remind you, earlier it was reported that a huge -scale forest fire was irritating to France.
