The 85-year-old leader of the Catholic Church admitted that he could no longer continue moving to the rhythm as before.
Pope Francis is not ruling out his resignation as head of the Roman Catholic Church for health reasons. He said this in a Sky News interview on Saturday, July 30.
At the same time, the pontiff said “there is nothing unusual” in his possible resignation.
“This is a completely normal option. This is not a disaster, you can change the pope,” said Pope Francis.
He admitted that he could not continue to “move in the same rhythm as before.” And during his trip to Canada in late July, 85-year-old Francis could barely walk due to a knee injury, spending most of his time in a wheelchair.
“I think at my age and with these restrictions, I should save energy to serve the church or, on the contrary, think about the possibility of stepping aside,” he said.
By the way, in 2013 there was already a precedent when Pope Benedict XVI, for the first time in 600, resigned from the position of head of the Catholic Church instead of ruling for life.
It will be recalled that Pope Francis previously announced his desire to visit Moscow and Kyiv. He said he would try to help in any way in establishing peace. It is known that the Pope’s visit to Ukraine will begin to be prepared immediately after the pope’s trip to Canada.
