The meeting with a comet, which broke up 12,800 years ago in the northern hemisphere, could cause rapid cooling of air and the ocean of the Earth – then the temperature dropped by about 10 degrees Celsius per year, and the cool temperatures lasted about 1200 years.
This was inserted by scientists from the University of South Carolina (USA) in accordance with the results of the analysis of ocean deposits, reports Eurekalert.
It is noted that among scientists there are different views on the causes of this cold:
- Many scientists believe that there were no comets, but water melted from the glaciers caused a warming of the Atlantic, significantly weakening the currents that carry warm tropical water to the north;
- Instead, the Komet hypothesis claims that the Earth passed through fragments of a destroyed comet, and numerous blows and shock waves of destabilized ice shields and caused massive floods of thawed water, which stopped key ocean currents.
However, the last hypothesis was previously less confirmed, because there was no evidence from the ocean. To eliminate this gap, researchers using modern technologies for studying nanoparticles analyzed the geochemistry of the four nuclei of the sea in the Buffin Bay near Greenland.
The analysis showed:
- Metal garbage, whose geochemistry corresponds to a dust comet. They were discovered along with microscopic spherical particles, the composition of which indicates predominantly earthly origin, although some materials are considered extraterrestrial – this suggests that these microspheres can be formed during the explosion of comet fragments directly above the ground or during an impact on the ground, which leads to materials;
- Nanoparticles with a high content of platinum, iridium, nickel and cobalt, which may indicate extraterrestrial origin.
It is noted that together these results indicate a geochemical anomaly, which occurred at the beginning of a suitable period of time.
The number of comet in the atmosphere was enough to cause a short -term “shock winter”, and then 1,400 years of cooling. The resulting results confirm the hypothesis that the Earth was encountered with a large comet about 12 thousand 800 years ago, ”the researchers emphasize.
At the same time, scientists note that this is not direct evidence, therefore, additional studies are needed to establish a clear connection between the meeting with the comet and the climate.
