Authorities in Panama have banned the registration of ships for 15 years to cleanse their armade by dangerous and weakened participants.
The Panama Ship register has stopped registering oil and balcony tanks over 15 years old. The decision was made under the auspice of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) to fight the “Shadow Fleet”. Portnews write about it.
According to the Naval Administration of Panama, from August 1, the registration of oil and balcony tanks for 15 years is no longer conducted.
As explained to the PMA, the decision was made based on a review of restraint on ships under the Panama flag. The main attention of the study is paid to the risks associated with penalties and operations of ships. The Trade Fleet Department has established more than 70% of all detention vessels under the Panama flag over the past two and a half years with old ships. They are often associated with gray transportation-in particular, the delivery of oil from penalties, illegal STS operations, operations without actual insurance or violation of environmental standards.
New policies also provide control of control: regular inspection of ships every three months, especially in connection with ships with defined defects, as well as auditing control systems (ISMs).
Panama is the second largest flag register in the world for shipping.
Earlier, the Panama Marine’s shipping department officially removed the registration for more than 100 ships under the Panama flag, which was under international penalties.
