Regular walking is a widely recognized way to improve health and health.
Nevertheless, even only 15 minutes of walking at a fast pace add an even more positive effect, regardless of another physical activity that a person succeeds. This is evidenced by the results of a recent study by American scientists published in the American journal of preventive medicine, reports Eurekalert.
Although the advantages of daily walking for health are well known, only a limited number of studies studied the influence of factors such as mortality, ”the researchers emphasize.
Scientists analyzed the data of almost 80,000 people. The participants in the study reported an average time per day (in a matter of minutes), which they usually spend on “slow” walking (for example, movement, walking at work, walking dogs or easy exercises) and “fast” walking (for example, climbing, quick walking or exercises).
Scientists have found that:
- Fast walking for only 15 minutes a day was associated with a decrease in total mortality by almost 20%;
- At the same time, a less significant decrease in mortality was discovered in case of slow walking for more than three hours a day;
- This benefit remained significant even after accounting for other lifestyle factors.
The protective effect of fast walking was extended to all causes of death, but was the most pronounced in the case of cardiovascular diseases, the article will say.
It is noted that the benefits of fast walking did not depend on the overall level of physical activity in their free time – even among those who were already engaged in slow walking or some types of physical activity, adding a rapid decrease in mortality.
According to the study, the advantages of fast walking for the health of the cardiovascular system are as follows:
- Increases the effectiveness of the heart as aerobic load, rapid walking improves cardiac output, increases the supply of oxygen and increases the efficiency of the pumping function of the heart, which leads to an improvement in the general condition of the cardiovascular system;
- controls the risk factors of cardiovascular walking diseases, helps to control the weight and composition of the body, a decrease in obesity and associated risks, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia;
- The accessibility of walking is a convenient, low intensive activity that is suitable for people of any age and level of physical training.
