Russia has been using the group since March in major battles in Donbass amid a severe shortage of infantry.
Russian private military company Wagner has been operating in eastern Ukraine since March in coordination with the Russian military. The group was likely given responsibility for some sections of the front line, such as regular army units, according to a report by the British Ministry of Defense, published on 29 July.
It is noted that this is a significant change from the group’s previous experience of use since 2015, when it usually carried out missions other than open large-scale regular Russian military activity.
“This new level of integration further weakens the Russian authorities’ long-standing policy of denying ties between PMCs and the Russian state. Role Wagnerlikely changed because the Russian Ministry of Defense was experiencing a severe shortage of combat infantry, but unlikely forces Wagner is enough to significantly change the trajectory of the war,” the intelligence agency stressed.
PMC has been in the news before Wagner played a central role in the battles for Popasnaya and Lysychansk in the Luhansk region, but suffered heavy losses.
