Nehammer said that sanctions against Russia are not as effective as expected, but the world should continue to support Ukraine.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said sanctions against the Russian Federation were not as swift as expected. He also opposes the Russian gas embargo. This was announced on Thursday, July 28, at a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Telex reports.
According to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, most European countries believe that war is never a good political tool. At the same time, the sanctions against Russia are not affecting it as quickly as previously thought, which is a bit disappointing. At the same time, Nehammer emphasized that it is too early to assess the impact of the sanctions.
“I would argue that sanctions should be more damaging to the people we introduce them to than to those who impose them. Austria’s position is clear: a gas embargo is not an option. If a gas embargo is introduced, German industry will collapse, and with it, the Austrian economy will also be dragged down,” the chancellor said.
However, Nehammer noted that the world should continue to support Ukraine despite the slow impact of the sanctions.
Earlier, Viktor Orban called on the European Union to lift sanctions on Russia or reconsider them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine answered him.
