Steinmeier, during a visit to Vilnius, said the decision to deploy German brigades was Berlin’s obligation to ensure Lithuania’s safety.
The presidents of Lithuania and Germany Gitanas Nauceda and Frank-Walter Steinmeier at a joint meeting discussed Ukraine’s support and pressure in Russia.
Naubeda noted that he discussed with President Steinmeier the close cooperation of Lithuania and Germany in the field of defense, supporting Ukraine, pressure in Russia and strategic investment in military mobility.
“Germany remains a major allies in guarantee security, maintenance and peace in Europe,” Nauceda wrote on Social Network X.
German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who visits Vilnius, said the decision to deploy German brigades was Lithuania Berlin’s obligation.
“This new brigade confirms our both responsibility and devotion to the alliance. We know that one who protects Lithuania protects the values of Europe and Europe. I am proud that my country is shoulders with Lithuania, guided by friendship, responsibility and the name of freedom and Europe,” he emphasized.
The German president also emphasized that freedom is responsibility, and not something that can be considered.
“Freedom is not a state, it is a task. Freedom is responsible, responsibility for each other, for peace, for Europe,” he added.
Germany has troops in Lithuania, which borders the Russian Kaliningrad region and Moscow’s allies of Belarus, since 2017, in the framework of efforts to ensure the safety of the NATO Eastern flank, but the new brigade has significantly deepened its participation.
Remember that this year Germany will provide Ukraine for military assistance for 7 billion euros. But it is also considered the provision of another 1.9 billion euros.
