On the morning of June 27, when Bilda became known, German fighters rose to intercept the Russian IL-20 m reconnaissance aircraft, which flew out of Kaliningrad without a flight plan and a distinctive signal.
IL-20M flew into the international airspace between Poland and Germany.
According to Bilda, at 9.16 in the morning, NATO activated the emergency response system – and after 16 minutes two EUROFITER fighters flew out of LASE near Rostok. At 9.54, they established visual contact with the Russian plane over the Baltic, in the area of the Polish city of Kolobzag – only one hundred kilometers from the coast of Germany.
As a result, IL-20M did not break the airspace of Germany and went north about 40 kilometers from the island of Uzedom. One of the fighters was accompanied by an airplane on the Danish Island of Borngolm. After that, both Eurofighter returned to the base safely.
Since the beginning of the year, according to Bild sources, this is the ninth case when NATO uses fighters to intercept Russian military aircraft.
