The head of the Russian Federation complained about the confiscation of Russian reserves, calling the actions to the West “open theft.”
Russian leader Vladimir Putin said the seizure of Russian gold reserves and foreigners of Western countries should accelerate the regionalization of payment systems and will have a positive impact for the global economy. He was quoted by Rossmi.
“They continue to say that our money is a thief. But once this happens, the movement towards the regionalization of payment systems will accelerate and get, without doubt, an irreversible character. And generally it is a useful for the global economy. Perhaps it’s worth paying for it,” Putin said.
He also said that from a legal point of view it is better to call actions that are not “theft”, but “theft”.
“I have a legal education. Theft is a secret abduction of property. And here it all happens tomorrow, therefore, it is a robbery,” the Kremlin’s owner believes.
According to him, Russia will continue to develop its own tools for international financial settlement.
Separately, Putin emphasized limited cooperation in international financial institutions, especially the World Bank, accusing them of “political contact”. He emphasized that Moscow continues to reduce hope in western economic structures.
After the start of the entire Russian invasion of Russia in Ukraine in February 2022, western countries imposed sanctions against the central bank of the Russian Federation and the National Welfare Fund, frozen the property located in the G7 states. As the beginning of 2022, according to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, Russia’s international reserve costs: $ 207 billion in Euro, $ 67 billion in US dollars, $ 37 billion in British pounds and $ 64 billion in other currencies, including Japanese yen, Canadian and Australia dollars.
In 2024, the G7 countries agreed with the mechanism for use of income from the frozen properties of the Russian Federation to support Ukraine: these funds will be directed to repay the debt for KYIV for nearly $ 50 billion.
In March 2025, a group of US senators from both parties called on the administration of President Donald Trump to take more specific measures. They suggested not to be limited to income, but to move to Ukraine the entire frozen value – over $ 300 billion – and convince allies in G7 to do the same.
Earlier it was reported that Russia, as part of an agreement with the United States, could provide $ 300 billion frozen properties for the restoration of Ukraine.
