Switzerland introduces new rules for Ukrainian refugees – only those who are at risk of direct danger will be adopted.
In the fall of 2025, Switzerland will accept refugees from Ukraine without long administrative procedures only if their life and health are at risk of direct danger in their homeland. All the others should be directed to a shelter on a common basis. Before acquiring new rules in the fall, the government intends to coordinate its actions with the EU and expect consultations with Cantons.
The State Secretariat of Migration (SEM) should, when considering new applications for shelter, distinguish between “safe” and “dangerous” regions.
According to the current SEM assessment, in the west of Ukraine there are no intensive battles that are controlled by Ukraine in the West, ”the Switzerland government said.
Ukrainians who have already received a shelter for Switzerland will remain in the country. Nevertheless, the requirements will be strengthened for them: one who is more than 15 days in Ukraine, loses his special refugee status (15 days in the quarter are still allowed).
In Switzerland, less than 69,000 refugees from Ukraine are currently living.
