By buying Ukrainian electricity, the European Union can save up to five billion gas a year.
Ukraine can help Europe save about 5 billion cubic meters of gas annually, Energy Minister Germag Galushchenko said during a visit to Brussels on Tuesday, July 26, Ukrinform wrote.
“We can sell electricity, we have such capacity, up to 1.5 gigawatts, we can do it right now. This is good for the Ukrainian market, because we have a big price difference. We can get money to maintain our financial liquidity. On on the other hand, we can save up to 5 billion cubic meters of gas in Europe: you just buy electricity and don’t use Russian gas,” explained the minister.
Galushchenko believes that next winter may be the last time Russia allows itself to put pressure on the EU with threats to cut off gas supplies.
As reported, today EU member states approved a weak plan to reduce gas consumption. Overall, the bloc intends to cut consumption by 15% by March next year, but some countries will cut consumption by less.
Recall that on June 27, ENTSO-E agreed on the start of commercial export of Ukrainian electricity to EU countries. And the import-export of electricity to Romania for 100 MW started on June 30. In almost a month, Ukraine exported electricity worth UAH 500 million.
