Citizens of Ukraine make up more than 98.4% of all people who have received temporary protection in the European Union.
At the beginning of the year, nearly 4.3 million Ukrainians received temporary protection in EU countries. Most Ukrainian refugees are in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. This is proven by Eurostat data.
On January 31, 2025, nearly 4.3 million Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes in Ukraine due to Russian invasion under temporary EU protection.
The largest number of Ukrainians were accepted:
Germany – 1 170 250 people (27.3%);
Poland – 993 015 people (23.2%);
Czech Republic – 394 985 people (9.2%).
In January, a slight increase in the total number of refugees in EU countries was recorded – of 25,530 people (+0.6%). The greatest growth is in Germany, the Czech Republic and Spain. At the same time, their numbers were reduced to Denmark, France, Austria and Lithuania.
“The citizens of Ukraine make up more than 98.4% of all people who have received temporary protection in the EU,” the report said. Among them:
Female – 44.8%;
Children – 31.8%;
Men – 23.4%.
In terms of 1000 living in EU countries, the highest concentration of Ukrainians in the Czech Republic (36.2), Poland (27.1) and Estonia (26.0), while the EU average is 9.5.
In the first quarter of 2025, the European Union gave the defense status for the first time 66 315 asylum applicants – this was a third less than the end of 2024. Usually, Afghans, Venezuelan and Ukrainians received status.
According to the Center for Economic Strategy, until the end of November 2024, 5.2 million Ukraine refugees remained abroad. Most (3.7 million) left on western boundaries, another 239 thousand – by Russia or Belarus. In addition, about 1.3 million Ukrainians became refugees in Russia or Belarus.
June 20 celebrates World Refugee Day, founded by the UN. This day is designed to attract the international community’s attention to the fate of people who are forced to leave their homes because of armed conflicts and persecutions.
Keep in mind that the European Union has made a political decision to expand until March 4, 2027 temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees who were forced to leave their country due to the war that Russia’s wage against Ukraine.
