In Turkey, a huge -scale campaign against obesity has begun – now citizens can be in public in the streets. The initiative caused serious criticism, written the Turkish minute.
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan introduced a large -scale obesity campaign, which included public trials of the people’s weight in the streets. The purpose of the campaign is to cover 10 million people in all 81 provinces of the country.
From May 10 to July 10, employees of sanitary services will measure the growth and weight of citizens in public places, calculate the body mass index and, if the standard exceeds, send people to medical centers for consultations with nutritionists.
According to the World Health Organization, for 2023, a third of Turkey’s adults suffer from obesity.
The initiative has caused serious criticism on social networks. Users express concerns about possible public shame and privacy. Some jokes that authorities can confiscate food to people in the streets, others call the “hunting” campaign.
