After the Taliban, the Afghan Chess Federation continues to work, teaching both men and women to play chess, and to hold various competitions nationwide.
The ministry of encouraging good and the prevention of vice, which emerged after the power of the country was seized Taliban, declared the game of Chess Haram – that was, prohibited from a religious perspective. According to the Zamin Portal, Taliban authorities also closed Afghanistan’s chess federation.
Former Executive Director of Chess Federation Afghanist Abasin Mokhibi spoke about the country’s next ban. According to him, for the past 11 months, not a single contest or seminar has been held in the country.
He noted that on May 9, chess community representatives turned to the Sports Department with the request to allow them to continue playing and developing chess clubs in the country, as well as receive support for tournaments. They replied that there was a command that was forbidden chess, and the federation was left with the right to work.
The official reason for the ban on chess is called the difference between the game in Islamic customs. The media reports that the Taliban considers chess gambling.
Initially, after the radical Islam had power, many restrictions were introduced in the country – most of them were designed for women. Local girls should not walk around the parks, go out with a covering face, work in non -government organizations, and a year ago it is forbidden women to speak out loud in public.
The Taliban explains that these changes are created for “encouraging virtues and eradicating vice.” At the same time, restrictions related to Sharia laws (the system of policies and customs related to the strict Islamic interpretation) were also introduced against men. Thus, in 2024, men were prohibited from shaving a beard. As a result, 300 policemen refused to grow their hair on their faces in the country.
In August, Taliban forbid men to wear relationships, women to look at men, and generally all people publish “an image of living creatures.”
Earlier in Afghanistan, women were prohibited from visiting the National Park. The Taliban minister said that “a overall -analysis of attractions is not necessary for women.”
