The British leader spoke for the last time in the House of Commons as prime minister, gave advice to his successor at the head of the government, remembered the Ukrainians and ended his speech with the legendary phrase in Spanish: “Hasta la vista, baby!” (Happily, baby – “Angle”).
Members of the Conservative Party gave Johnson a standing ovation. In the speech, the prime minister also advised the successor to protect the Ukrainians. Video part of speech leads Sky news.
I want to use the last few seconds, Mr. Speaker, to offer some advice to my successor, whoever he or she may be. First, stick with the Americans, protect the Ukrainians, stand up for freedom and democracy everywhere,” Johnson said.
He announced his resignation in early July under the pressure of a number of domestic political scandals and calls from fellow party members. Until a new leader is elected, Tory Johnson continues to serve as prime minister.
As of today, four contenders are taking part in the election of the leader of the Conservative Party: former finance minister Rishi Sunak, junior trade policy minister Penny Mordaunt, foreign secretary Liz Truss and former equality and local government minister Camie Badenoch.
On July 19, the British House of Commons, after five hours of debate, failed to announce a vote of no confidence in the government led by Johnson. 349 deputies supported the government, and 238 voted against
The debate dealt mainly with domestic issues. Labor blamed the Johnson government for the failure of social support for the population, while the Conservatives announced an effective fight against COVID-19 and Brexit.
If a vote of no confidence were still announced to the government, then general elections were expected in Britain.
