A rare letter written on the Titanic board a few days before the disaster became the most expensive document in its genre.
In England, a unique artifact in history was sold at the auction – a letter written on the board the legendary Titanic on April 10, 1912.
Its set is an American businessman and writer Archibald Gracie, a first -class passenger who miraculously survived a shipwreck.
The letter left the hammer for a record of 350 thousand euros. Representatives of the Henry Aldridge & Son Auction House mentioned that it was one of the most important documents related to the titanic they met.
In a letter sent from the Irish Port of Quinstown – the final stop before going to the Atlantic, Gracie described the luxury of aislein and the environment. “It’s a nice ship, but I’ll wait for the end of the trip before I can express my opinion about it,” he wrote to a friend in England.
A few days later, on the night of April 15, the Titanic ran into an iceberg and sank, removing about 1,500 lives. Gracie helped evacuate the passengers, he bathed in the ocean, but he survived, holding the upholstered boat for four hours.
After the tragedy, Gracie wrote the book “True About Titanic”, which became a best seller. However, he could not recover after the experienced – due to complications from diabetes and hypothermia, the man died on December 4 of the same year.
