Greenland will never be a “topic of owner”, which can be purchased, Nielsen’s new prime minister said during his first visit to Denmark after office.
New Greenland Prime Minister, 33-year-old Jens Frederick Nielsen said on April 27, the Arctic Island will never be a “owner” for sale. Politicians criticized US statements about possible territorial seizures, calling them a manifestation of disrespect. Reuters reported this Sunday, April 27th.
“We have never, under no circumstances, will be the owner that you can buy, and, in my opinion, this is the most important thing we need to understand,” Nielsen told journalists during his first visit to Denmark after office on April 7.
He was accompanied by prime minister Denmark Mette Fredericksen.
Greenland’s Prime Minister also emphasized that the island now needs to “approach Denmark.”
Nielsen’s visit took place after the Prime Minister’s journey to Greenland in early April. Earlier, Fredericksen had already responded to the ideas of US president Donald Trump regarding the island’s territory, saying “he is not worthy to add another country.”
Both Fredericksen and Nielsen emphasized the readiness for negotiations with the current American leader.
“We are ready for strong partnerships and further development, but we want respect,” Nielsen emphasized, adding that Greenland is willing to deepen relationships with the United States.
Remember, Trump repeatedly declared his intent to Annex Greenland. On Sunday, he repeated it again, added that it would happen 100%. However, he did not exclude the use of military force.
Trump also expressed confidence that Rutte “plays an important role” in Greenland’s climb to the United States. The Secretary of NATO secretary noted that “NATO did not want to draw the NATO in such discussions, but recognized Greenland’s importance for Arctic security due to increased interest in the region from Russia and China.
Recently, US vice-president Jay Di Wance visited the American military base in northwest of Greenland, where he criticized Denmark’s policy to the island and remembered Trump’s statements about its strategic importance for the United States.
