The future of pilot training is a complex issue that must consider many factors, said the head of the US Air Force.
The United States and allies are discussing the possibility of training Ukrainian pilots as part of a long-term plan to help the country’s air force. It was reported on July 20 by Reuters in relation to the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, General Charles Brown.
A senior military official confirmed that discussions are ongoing, but no decisions have yet been made.
According to the agency, thanks to Western weapons, Ukraine was able to prevent Russia from establishing control over the skies. However, the country also seeks to overcome dependence on Russian aircraft – earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force publicly expressed hope for F-15 and F-16 fighters.
It is emphasized that Brown’s comment was made a few days after the US House of Representatives filed a bill that would allocate $100 million for the training of Ukrainian pilots.
The general declined to comment on the law, but noted that the training of Ukrainian pilots is a complex issue that must take into account the military situation and Kyiv’s ability to take pilots out of combat for long-term training.
Asked how long it would take for a Ukrainian pilot to transfer to an American fighter, Brown said an American pilot could be trained on a new type of aircraft in two to four months.
According to him, the transition from the Soviet system will be “more difficult.”
It was previously reported that Ukraine is negotiating with Western partners on the supply of F-15, F-16 or F-18 fighters at all levels.
