The related bill is in the Seimas. This could affect people with dual citizenship who support the Russian war in Ukraine.
Latvian President Egils Levits announced the need to remove the citizenship of people who support Russia’s war against Ukraine. He said this in an interview on the RTVi channel.
Levits emphasized that it is impossible to be neutral in the current situation.
“If a person is neutral, it means that he does not understand the essence of the matter,” said the Latvian president.
According to him, among the Latvian Russians there is a part that is “clearly pro-Ukrainian”, but there are still those who “do not yet understand what is happening, but are gradually moving towards understanding.”
“And a part, which is a minority, supports the position of Russia. And this means that they are outside the spectrum of democracy,” Levits stressed.
According to him, those who support the Russian invasion of Ukraine can be included in the list for the removal of Latvian citizenship: we are talking about holders of dual citizenship.
Levits added that the corresponding bill is in the Saeima.
It was previously reported that a Latvian court punished a pensioner who wished Ukrainians dead.
It will be recalled that the National Electronic Media Council of Latvia has imposed a ban on the broadcasting of the last 80 TV channels from Russia, which can still be watched in the country.
