In Greece, due to a large forest fire in the mountainous region of Penteli, near Athens, at least 600 people from four districts and local hospitals were evacuated. This was reported by Protothema.
The fire broke out on Tuesday, July 19, in the afternoon on Mount Penteli, about 27 km north of central Athens. According to eyewitnesses, by nightfall the fire could be seen from the island of Evia, about 50 km away.
About 420 firefighters, supported by 85 vehicles, tried to douse the blaze, which burned in different directions late into the night. The killing was complicated by strong winds reaching speeds of 80 km/h.
24 helicopters and planes dropped water on the fire, but were forced to stop working at night for safety reasons.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of four districts: Drafi, Anthousa, Dioni and Dasamari. They also advised residents elsewhere to prepare to evacuate.
A hospital and the National Observatory of Athens were also evacuated as a precaution. Traffic on the roads leading to Penteli came to a standstill.
It will be recalled that it was previously reported that in the south of Croatia, near the town of Sibenik on the Adriatic coast, a large forest fire broke out.
