European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signed a memorandum on strategic partnership in the energy sector with Ilham Aliyev on July 18 in Baku.
Azerbaijan will supply 20 billion annually until 2027 (currently they supply 8.1 billion).
The gas will go via South Stream to Bulgaria and from there to the rest of the EU. Earlier it became known about the completion of the construction of the interconnector Greece-Bulgaria. It allows transporting Azerbaijani natural gas to Bulgaria, and from there to the rest of Europe.
The Memorandum of Understanding on the Strategic Energy Partnership between the EC and Azerbaijan contains a commitment to double the capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor.
It is expected that Azerbaijan will already now increase natural gas supplies to Europe up to 12 billion cubic meters. m in 2022.
The Memorandum also states that the EU and Azerbaijan share an accelerated transition to energy from renewable sources and the fight against harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
On July 19, the EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council will meet in Brussels to consider general issues of bilateral relations and discuss potential areas of mutual interest for cooperation in the future.
