The Dublin official has decided to temporarily cancel the visa-free regime for foreigners from 20 countries to give space to Ukrainians forced to leave their homeland due to Russia’s aggression.
The Irish government has suspended the visa-free regime for refugees from most European countries to save areas for Ukrainians forced to leave their homeland due to Russia’s military aggression. Politico reported this on Monday, July 19.
Ireland hosts 43 thousand Ukrainians to date, but the country does not have enough places to receive more refugees, the newspaper notes.
The report says that as a result of the lack of space, hundreds of Ukrainians, mostly women and children who arrived in the country last week, had to spend the night on the floor of an abandoned building at Dublin Airport. A few days later, Ukrainian citizens were placed in a tent city built north of the capital.
The Irish government attributes these problems to the large flow of refugees from Europe. Therefore, it was decided to suspend the visa-free regime for refugees from 20 EU countries for 12 months: Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland.
Recall that the Irish authorities have admitted that there are not enough places for incoming refugees from Ukraine to settle in them. To solve the housing problem for Ukrainians, the Irish government decided to provide the Gormanston military camp for these needs.
In addition, the media reported that Ireland had chilled the assets of Russians to the tune of € 1.7 billion.
