There are 64 thousand homes in the country, of which nearly 7 million people can at the same time accommodate.
Sweden started the huge -scale modernization of its civilian shelters – all 64 thousand bunkers in the country should be brought to a state that can protect even from a nuclear strike. Bild reported this on Wednesday, April 2.
According to the Swedish Civil Protection Service, 100 million kroons (about 9 million euros) are allocated to update the homes.
If necessary, up to 7 million people can hide in bunkers (at the same time, the entire Sweden population is about 10.5 million people).
There are two types of such dwellings in the country – ordinary, built in residential buildings, and these -defined felbunkers, cut into rocks or built from durable concrete. They should protect not only from an explosive wave and fragments, but also from radiation, chemical or biological weapons.
The project of modernization fits the overall approach of total defense adopted in Sweden: In the case of war, every citizen should know his role and be prepared for action. After all, the arrangement began with 25 big bunkers.
Sweden’s prime minister Ulf Kristerson said the country will increase military costs from current 2.4% to 3.5% of GDP by 2030. He called it the biggest increase in defense from the Cold War.
Remember that in 2024, Sweden finally left the neutrality and joined NATO.
Earlier it was reported that in Germany a national plan for creating bunkers was developed, which included a wide variety of events.
