The French court began to announce the verdict of the leaders of the distant Marina Le Pen in case of expenses for state funds. Together with her, they were also guilty of eight members of the European parliament.
About this today, March 31, reports RFI.
The consideration of this case began on September 30, 2024.
Then it was reported that, according to the investigation, members of the National Front in the European Parliament used the scheme from 2004 to 2016, according to which the European Union paid their funds from their funds to MEP assistants, although they actually worked on the aforementioned political force and did not participate in affairs. The salary of such an assistant reached 21 thousand euros per month.
The court estimated a total loss of 2.9 million euros, because the European parliament “took responsibility for people who actually worked for a distant party.”
The prosecutor’s management demanded at the age of five to exclude the ability to occupy public positions and five years in prison (two of which should not be conditional). It is also required that Le Pen pays a fine of 300,000 euros.
Judge Benedict de Pre, starting to read the proposal, immediately warned the audience at the hearing that this process would be long:
It will be a little long. The court has no desire to maintain intrigue, but it will act as usual, giving a number of explanations for the decision. We clearly understand that what is behind is beyond the scope of this courtroom, but the court will continue to work as usual.
As of 13.00, it is known that all defendants are deprived of the right to participate in the elections. Such a punishment is “necessary” because it has a “punitive and necessary function,” the judge explained. There are no detailed offers at the moment. The sentences will enter into force immediately, even before the appeal.
