U.S. authorities, along with Spanish officials, seized the oligarch’s yacht on Monday amid sanctions against Russian elites in the invasion of Ukraine.
At the request of U.S. authorities, Spanish officials seized a 255-foot yacht known as the Tango Palma in the port of Mallorca. Its value is at least $ 90 million.
The yacht is owned by Ukrainian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and heads the Renova Group, a Russian conglomerate interested in minerals, mining and technology, among many other sectors. Wexelberg, who previously owned homes in New York and Connecticut, was also questioned in an investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Justice Department officials received the confiscation order after arguing that the yacht had to be confiscated for violating the penalties law. This is the US hijacking of the oligarch yacht after Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen formed a working group of Russian elites, puppets and oligarchs to impose sanctions on their invasion of Ukraine.
