Italy and Spain, with the third and fourth EU economy, believes that the adoption of the final decision on this initiative is still premature.
Italy and Spain said they are currently not ready to support the plan for increasing military assistance in Ukraine to 40 billion euros in 2025, which the EU diplomacy leader of Kai Callas suggested. This was expressed by representatives of the countries during a meeting of foreign Ministers of the European Union on Monday, March 17, Reuters reported.
It has been mentioned that the leaders of the two -country foreign ministry have suggested to wait for the results of negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and understand if new steps will be taken to achieve the world.
Italy and Spain, with the third and fourth EU economy, respectively, believe that making a final decision on this initiative is still preceded.
It is also noted that France has announced some warnings about the plan.
The publication record that the plan is satisfied with significant support in the north and eastern European countries, while some states in South Europe are more restrained here. This distribution reflects the geographic factor: the states located closer to Russia have provided more assistance to Ukraine about its GDP, while countries in South Europe have made smaller contributions.
According to the Kil Institute of the World Economy, Estonia, Denmark and Lithuania, from January 2022 to December 2024, allocated more than 2% of their GDP from January 2022 to GDP, has been the leader of Ukraine military support. At the same time, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus sent less than 0.5% of GDP to help Kyiv.
Hungary is located at the bottom of the EU table.
It is expected that Hungary and Slovakia, who previously opposed military assistance in Ukraine, will not block the initiative, as contributions remain voluntary.
As reported, after a meeting on Monday, Kai Callas said the initiative of the EU’s double help had extensive support. The discussion is conducted only around the details.
Remember that in February, Bloomberg reported that the European Union was preparing an additional military assistance package for Ukraine worth nearly 20 billion euros.
But it was later found that countries in the European Union could rise by a third of a package of additional military assistance for Ukraine – up to 30 billion euros.
