On March 13, Belgium and Portugal conducted searches for corruption in the European parliament in favor of Huawei.
The searches were held in houses and offices of several former and current Huawei lobbyists. They are suspected of bribery of the current or former members of Europe of the European Parliament to promote the company’s trading policy.
According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, the main person participating in the case is Valerio Ottoly, the director of public relations in the European Union since 2019. For 10 years, he was an assistant in the parliament of two former Italian deputies of the European parliament.
The newspaper writes that members of members of the parliament can bribe Huawei smartphones, as well as tickets for football matches – Huawei has a private bed in Loto, the home stadium of the Belgian football club Anderlecht.
Investigators believe that since 2021, the company regularly used lobbying as a cover for corruption schemes. In Portugal, searches passed through the company through which payments were allegedly made.
Huawei has not yet commented on the situation, writes the Belgian newspaper Le Soir.
