Prime Minister Ontario Dag Ford has confirmed that “this instrument is still with them” and they will be able to “use it.”
The province of Ontario of Canada will temporarily not apply new duties for providing electricity to the United States. The corresponding decision was made after President Donald Trump’s threats were raised to 50%, aluminum and iron tariffs from Canada. This was reported by the American Television Channel CNN.
Prime Minister Ontario Dag Ford, after negotiating with US Minister of goods, Howard Latnik (the Lutnik option occurred) announced that he would suspend 25% of tariffs for electricity in three United States states.
“Eye in the eye – I agreed to temporarily suspend them (duties, – Ed.). But we always had this tool in our arsenal until we sat at the negotiation table, “the Canadian official assured.
However, he did not believe that the cancellation of the allowance was Trump’s success.
“I’m not going to call it a success, because this tool is still with us, and we can use it at any time,” Ford emphasized.
According to him, he is “trusting”: Trump will reject new tariffs for Canadian metals, though he added that he cannot speak on behalf of Washington.
Ford added that he and Latnik will “hold a productive conversation about economic relations between USA and Canada.”
He said he plans to meet with the US representative in trade negotiations to “discuss the updated USMCA (trade agreement between the USA, Mexico and Canada) on the eve of April 2 – the deadline for the same tariffs.”
As it has already been written, Ontario on Monday, March 10, has announced an increase of 25% of electricity costs for three American states.
We added that on March 4, Trump’s new 25%duties for goods from Mexico and Canada entered strength, as well as doubling duties to Chinese goods up to 20%. However, Trump later signed a command, which until April 2 released many goods from Canada and Mexico from duties.
