The United States is developing a plan for a possible weakening of sanctions against Russia, as President Donald Trump seeks to restore relations with Moscow and stop the war in Ukraine.
Reuters writes about this with reference to an American official and another person who knows about the situation.
According to sources, the White House instructed the State Department and the Ministry of Finance to prepare a list of sanctions that can be softened for discussion with representatives of Russia in the coming days in wider negotiations to improve diplomatic and economic relations.
Sanctions agencies are currently developing proposals to eliminate restrictions on the part of individual companies and persons, including some Russian oligarchs.
Despite the fact that the preparation of such “variant documents” is a common practice, a specific White House request emphasizes the readiness of Trump and its advisers to consider mitigating sanctions in a potential agreement with Moscow.
It is not yet known that Washington may be required in exchange for such a weakening.
The White House turned to the State Department and the Ministry of Finance in order to develop a possible plan for mitigating sanctions until Trump continued last week, and an emergency related to the situation in Ukraine. These sanctions, introduced by the Barack Obama administration in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea, assets and persons participating in Russia against Ukraine, reported Reuters.
It is still unclear what sanctions the Trump administration can be canceled first.
According to John Smith, the former head of the US Department of Finance, Trump may release a decree to start this process, but to eliminate restrictions from some companies he will have to enlist the support of the congress.
