Budapest prepared for various scenarios related to the Russian invasion. However, the Hungarian government wants their country to stay in this conflict.
Budapest officially has a scenario in case the Russian military invasion “reaches Transcarpathia.” However, Hungary prefers not to need these measures. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in an interview with Hirado, published on Friday, July 15.
According to him, the Hungarian government will continue to pursue a policy aimed at ensuring that the possibility of Hungary being taken to war remains minimal. He also explained what Budapest would do if “war came to Transcarpathia.”
“We have prepared scenarios in case of war, and the removal of the Hungarian military from the border guards is part of it,” the official said.
However, the minister did not explain how his words should be understood. It should be noted that the Russian occupiers had already launched rocket attacks in the Transcarpathian region in early May.
The Foreign Minister added that Hungary will continue to receive Ukrainian refugees.
It will be recalled that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in an interview with CNN that Hungary had decided not to participate in the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine so as not to endanger Hungarians living in Transcarpathia from shelling.
Ukrainian Hungarians were outraged by such a statement by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs about the refusal to provide weapons.
