Republican Senator Susan Collins (Maine) announced last week that she would vote in favor of Jackson.
The news that Jackson will be supported by two more Republicans is a blessing to the White House as it seeks to give a bipartisan feel to his appointment. It was also a disappointment to the conservatives, who launched an unscrupulous attack on Jackson’s leadership as an ombudsman and accused him of being outside the mainstream.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday voted to send Jackson’s nomination to the entire Senate, bringing her one step closer to becoming the first woman of color and the county’s first former Supreme Court Ombudsman.
A final vote on Jackson’s likely confirmation is expected next week.
