Following the invasion of the Russian Federation in 2022, authorities adopted laws that banned Anti -War statements, which designed them as “army discrimination” or “fake”. The fines were imposed on the Russian Federation, arrested people, punished beliefs.
The European Court of Human Rights has made an important decision in the group of cases of a new newspaper and others against Russia and 161 other statements. In these matters, Russia has been found guilty of persecution of people for criticizing the Russian army and war in Ukraine. This was known by the press service of the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday, February 12.
Following the invasion of the Russian Federation in 2022, authorities adopted laws that banned Anti -War statements, which designed them as “army discrimination” or “fake”. For such statements by the Russian courts, the fines imposed, the people were arrested and the beliefs were punished.
There are three Ukrainians among applicants. Ukraine took part in the case as a third party and emphasized that repression for pro -ukrainian views began after conquest of Crimea.
The ECHR has admitted that Russian authorities violated Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (Freedom of Expression). The court has introduced that persecution of war critics is part of a broad campaign to suppress the disagreement, and the arguments of the Russian Federation to justify suppression are for no reason.
Especially the court mentioned the cases when citizens were judged on the conquered Crimea under Russian laws, opposed to international law. The ECHR has confirmed that the application of Russian law to the occupied territories is illegal.
Let us remind, earlier in the ECHR, the law of the Russian Federation to “foreign agents” through human rights violations are recognized.
We added that Russian Federation leader Vladimir Putin has signed a law regarding failing ECHR resolutions released after March 15, 2022. According to the new criteria, the payment of financial fees for implementation of ECHR decisions made before March 15 can be carried out exclusively on rubles and only on accounts in Russian banks. Strasbourg court decisions are no longer the basis for revising decisions made by Russian courts.
As you know, Russia was kicked out of the European council because of the war released by the Kremlin against Ukraine.
