Suedi Murkezi lived in Kherson, captured by Russian troops, for more than two years. He was accused of participating in pro-Ukrainian protests.
US citizen Suedi Murkezi was arrested by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on July 13, citing relatives and friends of the detainee.
It was noted that in June, the 35-year-old Murkezi was imprisoned in occupied Kherson, where he had lived for more than two years.
On June 8, a man took gas while driving a Dodge Challenger with American numbers and never returned. Two days later, a friend saw him in a video spread on the separatist Telegram channels.
Suedi contacted his family a month later and said he was incarcerated in Donetsk. He was accused of participating in pro-Ukrainian protests that took place in Kherson.
Friends say Murkezi did not go to protests, nor did he participate in fights.
The U.S. State Department said it was aware of the man’s incarceration, but declined to comment further.
According to The Guardian, Murkezi was born in Rwanda. In 1994, during the genocide in that country, his family moved to the United States. Suedi served in the U.S. Air Force.
Since 2017, he began to travel frequently in Ukraine, and in 2020 he settled in Kherson. According to his friends, the man is engaged in cryptocurrency investments.
It will be recalled that on June 9, the so -called “DPR court” convicted foreign volunteers who fought in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. British Aiden Aslin and Sean Pinner, as well as Moroccan Saadoun Brahim, decided to be hanged.
