Russian Federation plans to place new military bases in Belarus

The parties were signed on December 6, 2024 in Minsk during a meeting of a higher state council.

The leader of the ruling regime of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin submitted to the state of Duma a bill in adopting an agreement signed in December 2024 with Belarus on security guarantees within a union state. Belarus, according to the agreement, “provides permission” for the placement of Russian bases and units on its territory. The document has been published on the official Russian Parliament website.

The contract will operate at least 10 years with an automatic extension for the next 10-year period.

The parties were signed on December 6, 2024 in Minsk during a meeting of the higher state council including the participation of Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin.

One of the points states that in the case of a “gesture of aggression” related to either technical and other aid, “after the appropriate official appeal.

Article 5 of this Agreement suggests that in order to prevent and demonstrate the works of aggression related to the Republic of Belarus, the military and other matters of the Russian Federation may be created in Belarus, as well as military units of the Russian Federation.

The document also refers to the “nuclear umbrella” for Belarus.

As we wrote earlier, Belarus held a military meeting until January 31 near the border with Ukraine.
