In the UK, former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak emerged as the front-runner in the first round of elections for a new Conservative Party leader and prime minister. It was learned on Wednesday, July 13th.
Sunak received 88 votes from the Conservative Party. Second place was taken by Penny Mordont, who is in the position of “junior minister” for trade policy – 67 votes.
The top three voting leaders were closed by current Foreign Minister Liz Truss with an indicator of 50 votes.
More than 30 votes required to participate in the next round were also obtained by:
-
former Minister for Equality and Local Government Kami Badenoch (40 votes);
-
House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee Chairman Tom Tugendat (37).
-
Attorney General Swella Braverman (32).
At the same time, former Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt and current Finance Minister Nadhim Zahavi did not get enough votes and will not run in the election again.
Subsequent rounds of voting will take place in the next few days to reduce the number of candidates to two.
Approximately 160,000 Conservative Party members will choose between the two finalists, with the winner to be announced on September 5th.
Recall, on July 7, Boris Johnson announced that he would step down from the posts of British Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Conservative Party amid a series of scandals.
