In accordance with the agreement on the ceasefire with Russia in the coming months, the United States wants Ukraine to hold presidential and parliamentary elections by the end of the year.
This was announced by the special representative of the Reuters agency Agency of the US President Trump for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg. According to him, most democratic countries hold elections during the war, which is “very important.” He also believes that this is “good for democracy.”
According to Reuters, the election problem is one of the key, which are discussed surrounded by Trump in the context of their plan for the end of the war in Ukraine. In particular, officials decide “how to push Ukraine to agree to the elections as part of the original truce with Russia.” The Trump administration will also insist on the “stopping of the fire” before the negotiations.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Constitution and the laws of Ukraine are not allowed by the presidential and parliamentary elections during martial law. At the same time, he suggested that in the event of a hot war, the parliament will abolish martial law in the country and set a date of election.
Meanwhile, the President of Zelenski said that the exclusion of Ukraine from the negotiations of the United States and Russia about the war in Ukraine will be “very dangerous”. According to him, to develop a ceasefire plan, additional discussions are needed between Kyiv and Washington. He said this in an interview with Associated Press.
The conversation occurred with the recent statements of Trump that we and Russian officials “spoke” about the end of the war and conduct “very serious” discussions with Russia.
They may have their own relationship, but talking about Ukraine without us is dangerous for all, ”Zelensky said.
He also invited the US Secretary of State to visit Ukraine after his statement that the war had returned Ukraine 100 years ago.
He indicated that his team maintains contact with the Trump administration, but they are still a “common character”.
At the same time, the President of Ukraine expressed confidence that in the near future personal meetings will be held to develop detailed agreements:
We need to work more on this, ”said Zelensky, adding that in the first weeks after Trump’s inauguration, it is natural to focus on internal matters.
With the return of Trump to the White House, relations between Ukraine and its largest ally, the United States, were on the turning point.
Zelensky said that during a telephone conversation with Trump, they agreed to meet in the event of his victory to discuss steps to stop the war.
Nevertheless, the planned visit of the special ambassador of Trump to Ukraine Kellogue was postponed “for legal reasons”.
This was accompanied by a sudden freezing of external assistance, which actually forced Ukrainian organizations to stop a number of projects.
